HERIG BERLIN - TOUCH OF ART

Hering work is not so much about decoration for the dining table as about its essence…

Stefanie Hering, designer, master craftswoman and ceramics expert, founded the factory in Berlin in 1992. Imbued with her personality and creative energy, Hering Berlin today produces crockery, drinking glasses, table textiles and lamps. The image of the classic dining table in Germany still bears the stamp of the bourgeois 'Biedermeier' era in the 19th century.

Constant curiosity and a readiness to challenge this image, as well as new interpretations that derive from it, enable us to create products, which truly support the spirit of enjoyment and functionality in our modern age. In that way we liberate ourselves from the traditionally closed notion of the crockery 'service' and open up new ways of looking at the possibilities for entertaining in family and social situations.

At Hering Berlin we seek to shift the concept of hospitality out of its socially somewhat stiff, strictly formal dimension into one that is rather more underpinned by emotion. Frank pleasure, uncomplicated enjoyment, a clear aesthetic, impeccable craftsmanship and pure joy of life - that is how we see Hering Berlin. In all stages of production, which takes place in Germany, this avant-garde aspiration is accompanied by processes embodying the highest levels of skill, with top-quality craftsmanship in socially just working conditions.

The foundations of the creative inspiration that runs throughout the firm bear the unmistakeable stamp of the personality and creativity of company founder Stefanie Hering.

The exceptional abilities of the designer and master craftswoman include, in addition to her unique visual creativity, the extraordinary craftsman-like skill required to be able to produce formally sophisticated designs in dimensions that push the boundaries of what can be made in porcelain. This results from the constant striving to extend and fill in our knowledge of the possibilities for hand-made porcelain.

Stefanie Hering : » Our products stand out because of their very own design style, which relies on clear lines and clean-cut decorative features. This clarity of line and feature emphasises and points up the surrounding spaces, in which its effect is felt. In that sense, our company's collections change spatial contexts, without conflicting with other formal qualities. This means that products from our factory are as unlikely to clash in a baroque setting as they are in the purist visual contexts of contemporary architecture. Our collections never conflict with existing rooms, they create new spaces. With their clarity of form, they concentrate on the essentials.”

Stefanie Hering loves to cook, to set a table, to have guests. Even then, after moving from southern Germany to Prenzlauer Berg right after the fall of the Berlin Wall, where there were neither telephone lines nor reliable electricity, she invited friends over for grand dinners. But most of all, Stefanie Hering loves to talk about porcelain. About potter’s wheels and diamond cuts, about feldspar and quartz content, about spongeing and bowls and the beauty of biscuit, the unglazed porcelain with a slightly rough, velvety surface that only a few manufacturers can handle, and which is characteristic for Hering Berlin porcelain.
