MUUTO - enchanting Scandinavian design

Muuto, the young but already internationally successful design company, strives to add new chapters to the Scandinavian design history and put the region back in the lead on the international design scene. This vision is emphasized by the name Muuto – inspired by the Finnish word ‘muutos’, meaning ‘change’ or ‘new perspective’.

Muuto is firmly rooted in Scandinavian design, hand-picking the best designers from Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark, and giving them the freedom to express their personal design philosophy when designing everyday home interior products.

”We believe that the road to success for modern Scandinavian design lies in a strong belief in the best designers of our time. We give the designers the freedom to create new designs, and we see it as one of Muuto’s primary goals to be on the forefront in the development of the designers”, says Muuto director Peter Bonnén.

”This gives the Muuto designs great diversity and character and further links them to the Nordic heritage – a heritage Muuto is proud of and that all the designers carry with them as part of their professional luggage”, says Muuto director Kristian Byrge.

From the very beginning, the two founders of Muuto - Peter Bonnén and Kristian Byrge – were highly ambitious and strived to have their products represented in leading design shop all around the world. Today, just 7 years after the company was founded, Muuto’s collection of furniture, lighting and accessories is sold in more than 1000 of the World’s leading design shops on six continents. And more than 50 new designs have been launched from around 30 leading designers as TAF Architects, Norway Says, Anderssen & Voll, Lars Tornøe and Louise Campbell, all sharing Muuto’s ambition of reviving the proud Scandinavian design tradition.

THE NEW SOFT BLOCKS SOFA is designed by Norwegian Petter Skogstad, who works at Studio Anderssen & Voll. The Soft Blocks series consists of a 3-seater, a 2-seater and a pouf, all with Dotty Innofa upholstery in either blue or grey. The sofa consists of different sized soft blocks, which are compound in an asymmetric way, giving the sofa a playful and unique personality.

PETTER SKOGSTAD ON THE DESIGN “The idea behind Soft Blocks was to play around with the proportions of a conventional sofa, challenge straight continuous lines and explore the beauty of asymmetry. The result is a playful composition of soft blocks that are ready to welcome you in the most friendly and comfortable way.”

A VISU BAR STOOL is introduced to the Visu chair series designed by Finnish Mika Tolvanen for Muuto. The Visu Bar Stool comes in two heights and three different colors; grey, black and oak, and consists of a lacquered wood shell and base, and a durable steel footrest. The bar stool follows the Visu chair’s Nordic expression with its discrete nature, and is functionally and ergonomically correct in its composition. That is also why Mika Tolvanen initially chose the name Visu, which refers to the Finnish word for precision.

MIKA TOLVANEN ON THE DESIGN ”The Visu Bar Stool is a natural continuation of the Visu chair. The idea was to create a simple and elegant stool with great seating comfort, supported by a discrete footrest. The proportions of the chair are exactly right, and the chair is able to combine small elegant curves with longer straight lines in the quest of becoming an ever-relevant furniture.”
