But what Qatar is doing for the FIFA World Cup to be hosted in 2022 is something we have never seen before - this small country has a plan to build a new city that will host the opening of the World Cup and final matches.
Called Lusail, the new city will be built on the desert coast, nine miles north of Doha and will have enough space for comfortable accommodation for about a quarter million people and tens of thousands of tourists. The main element of this city will be of course the stadium, with a capacity of 86,250 places.
Even before the event Lusail city will be very stylish: it will include two luxury marinas, grand Marina shopping center with a roof that repels heat, running water and waterfalls, huge entertainment in the zoo park and Snow Park, and the Six Flags amusement park. Residents and visitors to the city will be able to move around it by using the light rail network or tunnel for pedestrians and taxis.
Also worth mentioning is the fact that the city was designed as an energy efficient and eco-friendly as possible, making it the most impressive city that will attract tourists even after playing the last match in the World Cup.
