Talking architecture with Matthias Sauerbruch and Francisco Mangado


This year's calendar of cultural events in the Costruire Abitare Pensare programme is as rich as ever, bringing some of the biggest names in world architecture to Bologna.

Thursday 1 October, at the Galleria dell’Architettura, two major architects will be discussing their design philosophies: Matthias Sauerbruch from Germany, and Francisco Mangado from Spain. The discussion will be moderated by Fulvio Irace from Milan Polytechnic.

Matthias Sauerbruch is the founding partner of the Sauerbruch & Hutton architecture studio. From 1985 to 1990, he taught at AA, from 1995 to 2001 he was professor at Berlin Technical University and from 2001 to 2007, he was professor at the Academy of Figurative Arts, Stuttgart. He was visiting professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design from 2008 to 2011 and guest professor at the Arts University of Berlin from 2012 to 2014. Sauerbruch has held conferences, presided over and acted on competition juries, and taken part in conferences worldwide. He is founding partner of the Germany Council for Sustainable Building, Commissioner of the Zurich Building Council, trustee of the Bauhaus Foundation, Dessau, member of the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts and an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects.

Born in Navarrein 1957, Francisco Mangado completed his studies in 1982 at the Navarre School of Architecture and has always taught architecture since that time. He has been Visiting Professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Eero Saarinen Visiting Professor at the Yale School of Architecture, and Guest Lecturer at the École Polytechnique Fédérale, Lausanne. He is currently professor at Pamplona University and Visiting Professor at Cornell University, College of Architecture, Art and Planning.

His many prizes include the Thienne Architecture Award, the Architéchti Prize, the FAD prize for architecture, and Costrumat. Mangado’s most important works include the Pamplona Congress Centre and Auditorium, Place Pey Berland, Bordeaux, the Ávila Congress Centre, the Vitoria Archaeological Museum, the Palencia Stadium, the Spanish pavilion at Expo Zaragoza 2008 the Teulada Auditorium. In June 2008 he established the Fundación Arquitectura y Sociedad.
