The restaurant serves Gallic classics in a perfect Parisian setting.

Chef Daniel Rose knows a thing or two about French cooking. He opened his first restaurant, Spring, in Paris in 2006. His foray into the American dining scene resulted in New York's Michelin-starred Le Coucou. And now Rose is bringing his French cuisine to his hometown of Chicago.

Le Select, which opened on January 28, is Rose's first venture in the so-called Windy City. It's a classic French tavern, from the menu to the design of the dining room. Rose teamed up with interior design firm AvroKO to give his new bistro an air of French elegance throughout. Antique mirrors and arch accents are reminiscent of the restaurants and train stations you might find while exploring European cities.

The menu is also reminiscent of a Parisian tavern. You can start with appetizers such as onion soup, scallops and mussels bathed in white wine and butter. Main courses include steak and duck breast a l'orange, as well as specialties such as lightly fried scallops in a French curry with celeriac puree and a choucroute Strasbourgoise for two, packed with sauerkraut, smoked sausage, veal boudin and pork bellies. Sauteed radishes with butter and dauphine potatoes are just some of the side dishes on offer.

Desserts, the work of Casey Doody (the restaurant is a collaboration with the Boka restaurant group, which also includes places like Girl & the Goat and the Michelin-starred Boka), also include the classics: caramel crème, eclairs and profiteroles. Meanwhile, the wine list includes a whole range of bottles. Wines from famous regions such as Bordeaux and Burgundy are available alongside options from the Loire Valley and Roussillon.

Drinks can be enjoyed at your table, of course, or in one of Le Select's three bars. The tavern itself has two separate bar areas, while Bar 504 is located on the second floor, a more intimate place that can also be used as a private dining room.
