It had been believed for a long time that the name of the game, GOLF, was in fact an acronym – Gentlemen only, ladies forbidden, but it seems that it is actually a word with origins in the old Scottish dialects, which was later found in the old Scottish scrolls. However, the word golf has been accepted in the 16th century and it has been in use since then.
Golf became an Olympic sport in Paris in 1900, and it was also played during summer Olympic Games in 1904 in St. Louis. After that, because of lack of interest, it had not appeared in the Olympic Games until 2016.
