It all started in 1902, when master glassworker Emile Gallé designed an exquisite swirl of white Japanese anemones for the world famous champagne house Perrier-Jouët. The art work actually illustrated the spirit of the Art Nouveau movement, adding poetry to everyday objects. Organic lines and forms, crisscrossing stems and leaves; the art work became the emblem of the Bell Epoque cuvee and, the iconic image of Perrier-Jouët recognized the world over for its links to the art world. After Emile Gallé, now a well known Japanese floral artist Makoto Azuma works within this tradition, while demonstrating genuine originality. And, the resulting work, the Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Florale Edition by Makoto Azuma was internationally unveiled at a historical event that took place at the Happoen-garden at the heart of Tokyo City, Japan, which has a strong historical relationship with the luxury champagne house.
As this artistic collaboration is the first since Emile Gallé, Perrier-Jouët has also decided to make it a limited edition. The Japanese floral artist Makoto Azuma created a delicate composition that recalls the original design, an ethereal arabesque dotted with white Japanese anemones, flowers that are ‘as clam as they are beautiful’, representing truth and sincerity.
Belle Epoque Florale Edition by Makoto Azuma is a reverential homage to Emile Gallé famous Art Nouveau design, which was truly inspired by Japanese art culture. Makoto Azuma challenged the aesthetic boundaries to create a unique combined artwork.
The floral artist states, “I wanted to make something extraordinary, taking inspiration from the sensation of champagne inside the mouth, and the delicate movement of the ivy and leaves with a special attention and tribute given to Emile Gallé’s anemones.”
And, for this limited edition, Perrier-Jouët’s cellar master, Hervé Deschamps chose the 2004 vintage as the perfect expression of an exceptional year, the absolute essence of Perrier-Jouët. After ageing for 8 long years, this vintage now expresses the elegant, floral, diamond-cut style of the champagne house. Additionally, this silky and stylish vintage has an exceptionally long finish and a taste that hints at flowers and white fruit before evolving into slightly spicy notes of fresh marzipan.
