Turning the runway space into the corridor of a luxury hotel, lined with fantasy doors you could almost imagine had real retro-decorated bedrooms behind them, was Louis Vuitton’s fall / winter 2013 show. Like dark ’50s Hollywood starlets confined to their dressing rooms, they stepped out in négligée dresses and silk tap pants, bralets and robes, given the feel of autumnal underwear-turned-outerwear by way of heavy coats and furs.
Some of Marc Jacobs’ pyjama inspired pieces were softly beautiful in the way genuine relics of the era are: a floral slip paired with a soft sea-green mohair sweater, a plaid coat with a wide neckline and feathery sleeves, an ethereal lace frock on Kate Moss. But if one thing worked best of all on this runway of wigged, dark-lipped, brooding boudoir sirens, it was the cohesiveness of the whole. The success of the concept not only bodes well for sales, it makes stepping out in your pyjamas OK.
