The Ferrari 212 Inter replaced Ferrari's successful 166 and 195 Inter grand tourers in 1951. Unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show that year, the 212 was an evolution -a sports car for the road that could also win international races.

What makes the 212 Inter series so interesting are the individual differences between cars. Each was specially ordered by a customer, and every detail, from the body to the engine, had a large number of options.

Coachbuilders included Carrozzeria Touring, Ghia, Vignale, and Pinin Farina. The latter was an important move for the company, as Farina was already well-known for his styling skills. A mutual meeting between Pinin Farina and Enzo Ferrari create First Ferrari to be bodied by Pinin Farina and that was 212 Inter Cabriolet, chassis no. 0177E.

Both 2,500 mm and 2,600 mm versions were built -Export and Inter models. The 212 Inter was a longer car, built to accept more accommodating and comfortable bodies and its wheel base was unlike the Export model which had a wheelbase of only 2,250mm for racing on tight circuits. Both versions, however, had the same engineering characteristics, including a twin oval tube frame, independent front suspension, drum brakes and a potent V12 engine.

Production ceased at exactly 85 cars produced, the fastest road car in its time.
