For most travelers, luxury on a plane means a more comfortable seat and reliable Wi-Fi. For Rick Ross, things look a little different.
The American rapper and businessman reportedly spent as much as $700,000 to equip his private Gulfstream G550 with a Starlink system, allowing him to stream content, conduct business and take calls while his “Golden Eagle” flies at altitudes of more than 15 kilometers.
When a private jet already costs tens of millions of dollars, apparently even the internet cannot be ordinary.
Rick Ross claims he spent approximately $700,000 to install Starlink on his spectacular black-and-gold Gulfstream G550.
And that is only where the expenses begin. The Starlink Aviation Global Unlimited plan costs around $20,000 per month, amounting to a staggering $240,000 per year.
Ross described the connection as “amazing,” explaining that he can start a conversation while the aircraft is still on the ground and continue it through takeoff without losing the connection.
For a rapper whose aircraft functions simultaneously as transportation, an office and an entertainment space, the ability to remain connected throughout virtually the entire flight is apparently worth close to a million dollars in the first year alone.
Internet That Costs as Much as a Luxury Car
Starlink hardware itself costs around $200,000 for most business jets, which naturally raises the question: how did Ross get to $700,000?
The answer lies in the fact that installing satellite internet on a private jet has very little in common with mounting a Starlink antenna on the roof of a house.
The antenna must be installed on the aircraft, power and data cables have to be routed through the jet, networking equipment must be integrated with existing systems, parts of the luxury interior may need to be modified and, most importantly, the installation must satisfy strict aviation engineering and certification requirements.
The aircraft can remain out of service for two weeks or longer while the work is being completed.
Ross has not released a detailed breakdown of his $700,000 bill, so it is not known exactly how much was spent on the hardware itself, installation, modifications and other work.
But when it comes to private aviation, even Wi-Fi has to go through a serious engineering process.
Up to 1 Gbps at an Altitude of 15,000 Meters
Starlink Aviation Global Unlimited currently advertises download speeds of up to 1 Gbps with its Performance antenna, or up to 500 Mbps with the previous-generation system, while latency under ideal conditions can be as low as 20 milliseconds.
It has not been confirmed which version of the system Ross uses, so the maximum 1 Gbps speed cannot be directly attributed to his aircraft.
Still, the capabilities of such a connection are quite impressive.
Ross and his team can hold video conferences, use cloud platforms, send large files, stream video content and essentially continue conducting business without interruption while in the air.
One of the satellite system’s greatest advantages comes during long intercontinental flights over oceans, where conventional infrastructure is unavailable.
And Ross’s aircraft was built precisely for journeys like these.
His “Golden Eagle” Can Fly Almost 12,500 Kilometers
The aircraft in question is a 2012 Gulfstream G550, a business jet powered by two Rolls-Royce engines that can cover approximately 6,750 nautical miles, or around 12,500 kilometers, and reach an altitude of 51,000 feet – approximately 15.5 kilometers.
Ross named it Golden Eagle, and it would be difficult to mistake it for any other G550.
The jet features a dramatic black-and-gold exterior with his personal branding and the Maybach Music Group logo. The rapper previously revealed that the aircraft’s custom paint job alone cost him around $500,000.
Even its registration carries personal significance. The numbers 33055 represent the ZIP code of the area where he grew up, while 305 is Miami’s famous area code.
So that is half a million dollars for the appearance and another reported $700,000 for the internet – before even factoring in the monthly subscription, fuel, crew, maintenance and all the other costs associated with owning a Gulfstream jet.
A Million Dollars to Make Sure the Jet Looks Good and Never Loses Wi-Fi
Ross’s fortune is estimated at around $180 million, while his business empire has long extended far beyond music. For him, a private jet is therefore not simply a status symbol, but also a way to continue working while traveling.
In that context, Starlink becomes something more than an extremely expensive accessory.
Still, the numbers remain fascinating.
The Golden Eagle’s custom paint job cost around $500,000, the Starlink project reportedly added another $700,000, while the internet plan costs an additional $240,000 every year.
That means Rick Ross is prepared to spend almost $1 million on Starlink and the first year of service alone, simply to remain online while flying.
For most people, the message “Wi-Fi available in flight” is a nice little bonus. For Rick Ross, it is an investment worth as much as several houses.
