Handmade luxury - Savoir

In a London suburb, there is a workshop where the most expensive mattresses in the world that carry the signature of the brand Savoir are being made...

In this workshop, there are fourteen workstations, and for each of them has a person who manually creates each spring, mattress and headboard, from the beginning to the end. Each of the masters of the trade, which now create these superb pieces, had to be apprenticed for a year, to learn how to make the spring, two years for mattress and headboards, which many will see as excessive - but, if you know that the creation of one of the beds takes from 30 to 120 hours, and the fact that the cheapest of them cost over $ 12,000, then it all becomes clear.

These mattresses and beds were originally designed in 1905 for the Savoy hotel, but 25 years later, the hotel bought this company in order to maintain the exclusivity of its popular beds, but also to make them available to everyone. During the late nineties, the company was bought the current owners, who didn’t offer the highest price, but they were the only ones who have promised to continue to produce beds in the same way as it has been done in over 100 years.

The process of creating one of these beds is very long and does not start until the client emerges, because every mattress and each piece of these beds is custom made, bearing the signature of its creator. The client has the option of choosing two details that distinguish these beds from any other on the market - springs and horsehair from which they were made.

"Large springs are the key to this design," explained Alastair Hughes, co-owner of Savoir company. "They will come back again and again to its original shape. Epoxy spring will lose its flexibility over time, so your mattress will begin to collapse, and it is a disaster for whatever angle watching. “Springs, or coils, have different thicknesses, each of which is wrapped with quality material that protects them, but it also allows them to move independently. Of course, this process, like all others, is hand-work, and the type and position of springs vary depending on customer requirements, providing ideal support for the whole body.

Then, there is the horsehair, and Savoir of course utilizes the best available. It is steam cleaned, twisted into a rope, and after three months it has received a perfect texture. Each of the mattress of the brand contains millions of horsehair, which are manually "combed" to create the custom natural sandwich, which also contains wool, cow hair, cotton and cashmere.

Savoir mattress prices range from 12,850 dollars and go up to 87,350 dollars. When you consider that every part of the Savoir beds and mattresses is handmade, seamless and tailored to fit your needs, then their price is perfectly clear.
