Cano Cristales River is full of color due to algae and moss that grow in it. The color of the river depends on the season and amount of water. In the rainy season the river is fast and deep, and the plants in it are not getting a sufficient amount of light. During the drought there is not enough water for their livelihood.

But in the interim period between the rainy and dry season water level in the river becomes sufficient for many types of algae to bloom in spectacular colors. In the river you can find a real explosion of thousand shades of yellow, red, green, blue and black. This spectacle lasts for several weeks, from September to November.
The most beautiful river in the world is slightly less than 100 kilometers long and 20 wide. It is settled on the mountain Macarena (National Park Serrania de la Macarena). The nearest town is La Macarena which can be reached by plane in the organization of many Colombian tourist agencies.
