Fashion sector leaders donate money to fight coronavirus

Many key players in the fashion world are doing their best to support the fight against this disease…

The coronavirus epidemic, which originated in China, is spreading to the rest of the world, so the largest fashion corporations have decided to donate large sums of money to help scientists come up with a solution as soon as possible.

LVMH, Kering and Swarovski are just three names among several, who together donated $ 2.8 billion to fight the infectious virus. The World Health Organization says that there are more than 30.000 infected people worldwide. LVMH, owner of Louis Vuitton and Dior brands, among others, donated $ 2.3 million, while their main rival, Kering, a company who owns Gucci, donated over $ 1 million, and Swarovski joined the story with nearly half a million dollars. Much of the funding was sent directly to the Chinese Red Cross Foundation.

"Our thoughts are with many people affected by this virus, which is why we decided to donate money to contribute immediately to the fight," said François-Henri Pinault, CEO of Kering.

The airborne disease first appeared in Wuhan, China, and quickly spread due to its contagious nature, coinciding with the lunar New Year and the plane flights that made it reach many parts of the world. Chinese authorities have closed several cities because of the epidemic, leading to incredible stock market fluctuations. While altruism is certainly one of the elements of the fast-response fashion business leaders, the fact that this region has a major impact on the luxury industry has certainly contributed to it.

This type of coronavirus, which originated from animals, was not previously known, and it is this element that causes alarms. Previous outbreaks from this family of viruses include Sars, which claimed 800 lives in 2003. Symptoms, in this case, include pneumonia with shortness of breath, cough and fever. Fatal instances result in organ failure. According to some, the good news is that 71 people have successfully recovered from the disease.
