Cristiano Ronaldo Got Married Without the Spectacle: Five Children, Two Rings and One Photograph

Cristiano Ronaldo has accustomed the world to records, millions, private jets, supercars and a lifestyle that could hardly be described as modest.

A man who, according to reports at the time, once gave an entire Greek island to a friend as a wedding gift could easily have organized a spectacle for his own wedding that people would talk about for years.

Instead, he did almost exactly the opposite.

One of the most famous footballers of all time married his longtime partner Georgina Rodríguez in an intimate civil ceremony held on August 11, 2026, in Cascais, Portugal. According to available information, only their five children were there with them.

No hundreds of guests, no multi-day celebration, no exotic private island and no parade of celebrities. For a couple whose lives are followed almost minute by minute, the wedding was surprisingly discreet.

Two Rings Were Enough for Hundreds of Millions of People

Even simpler was the way the newlyweds decided to share the news with the world.

Ronaldo, whose Instagram profile is followed by more than 670 million people, posted a photograph of their hands wearing wedding bands. Instead of a lengthy emotional caption or a professionally produced video, he wrote simply:

“C❤️G.”

One photograph and two letters were enough for one of the world’s biggest stars to confirm that, after almost a decade together, he had married Georgina.

The discreet ceremony also put an end to rumors that had caused quite a stir in Madeira just days earlier. After speculation emerged that Ronaldo might get married in his native region, fans gathered outside the cathedral in Funchal expecting the footballer to arrive.

The real wedding, however, took place far away from such a spectacle.

When His Friend Got Married, Ronaldo Reportedly Bought an Island

Perhaps the best illustration of just how different Ronaldo’s approach was this time comes from the wedding of his former close friend and longtime agent Jorge Mendes.

Mendes married Sandra Barbosa in 2015 at the São João Baptista da Foz church in Porto. Around 400 guests attended the ceremony, including numerous famous names from the world of football, such as Pepe and Fábio Coentrão.

Ronaldo was the best man.

And his wedding gift soon became almost as famous as the wedding itself.

Portuguese media reported at the time that Ronaldo had allegedly bought the newlyweds – a Greek island.

The exact island, as well as its value, was never officially revealed. During that period, amid the Greek debt crisis, numerous private islands were being offered to international buyers, with prices ranging from several million to several tens of millions of dollars.

In other words, even if it was never confirmed exactly how much Ronaldo paid, it was the kind of gift unlikely to ever appear on a conventional wedding registry.

Ronaldo and Mendes Were Once Almost Inseparable

Such a gesture made sense considering the relationship the two shared at the time.

Mendes accompanied Ronaldo through virtually his entire rise to global superstardom. He helped facilitate his move from Sporting Lisbon to Manchester United in 2003, when Ronaldo was just 18, and later played a role in his historic £80 million transfer from Manchester United to Real Madrid in 2009.

Mendes once said that he had known Ronaldo since his teenage years and described him as someone who was “like a son” to him.

Their business relationship, however, fell apart toward the end of 2022, during the turbulent period surrounding Ronaldo’s departure from Manchester United. It marked the end of a partnership that had lasted almost two decades and had become one of the most powerful in modern football.

Eleven Years Later – A Completely Different Wedding

That is precisely why the contrast feels almost cinematic.

In 2015, Ronaldo attended a lavish wedding with around 400 guests and reportedly gave his friend an entire island.

Eleven years later, he needed nothing of the sort for his own wedding.

He and Georgina have shared almost a decade of life together. They met while Ronaldo was playing for Real Madrid, and their relationship gradually became one of the most closely followed love stories in the worlds of sports and entertainment. Together, they built a family and are now raising five children.

According to reports, those children were the only guests at the ceremony.

For a man whose wedding could easily have attracted the global elite of sports, fashion and business, choosing to share one of the most important moments of his life only with those closest to him may have been the greatest luxury he could afford.

Because when you can book virtually any location in the world, invite the biggest stars and organize a celebration worth millions, exclusivity no longer means having more.

Sometimes, it means having almost no one there at all.
