Materials, expression and function of ceramic products at Cersaie 2016

Four factors - the exhibition, the meeting place, interactions between people and knowledge of the material - are the foundation stones of Cersaie 2016.

"The new image is focused on the concept of exhibition, as a place in which the various levels and spaces of ceramics, in all its manufacturing and expressive variety, can meet and intersect, but also a place for meeting people interested in knowing, innovating and designing this extraordinary material".

A concept which, in the form of photographic images, considers ceramic coverings in a sectional view, thus underlining its character as a product and structural element. This image, conceived and realised by Silvia Spilateri, a third year student at the Industrial Design Laboratory of the Polytechnic School of Palermo University, constitutes the institutional image of the XXXIV edition of Cersaie, the International Exhibition of Ceramic Tile and Bathroom Furnishings, which this has once more invited Italian university and polytechnic students to design the image for the 2016 event.

Three school took part in the 2016 edition of the Beautiful Ideas competition: the Architecture Faculty of "La Sapienza" University, Rome (Design, Visual Communications and Multimedia), the Architecture Faculty of Genoa Polytechnic (Product and Event Design) and the Polytechnic School of Palermo University (Industrial Design).

From the submissions, the jury - design professionals such as Anna Steiner, professor at Milan Polytechnic, and Gianluigi Colin, art director of the Corriere della Sera newspaper, as well as representatives of Confindustria Ceramica - selected the work of Silvia Spitaleri, whose work, both as graphic composition and visual solution, highlights the materiality of the product in relation to the industrial process, as well as underlining the role of ceramics in architecture and other habitats, in which human figure remains the central focus.

Silvia Spitaleri is the fourth student to have won this important competition. Born at Erice (TP) in 1992, she graduated from the Michelangelo Buonarroti Art School, Trapani in 2011, at which she participated in a number of competitions: in 2008, the “L’Arte in Bottiglia” competition for the Barbera d’Asti wine label and the second “Il Volo di Pègaso - Oltre l’ignoto” artistic-literary competition; in 2009, a design competition run by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism for gadgets to promote the image of the Ministry itself; while in 2015 she competed as an artist in the Trapani Contemporary Art Biennial under the title “caseminime”.
