ABRAHAM - KINGDOM OF BUBBLES IN CANADA

In order to once more confirm that this world is a magical place, filled with beauties and phenomena which we couldn’t even imagine, we’re taking you to North America, to the state of Canada to be more precise.

There, you can see artificial Lake Abraham. This lake is settled in the western part of Canada, in the province Alberta. It was created while Bighorn dam was build in 1972, when the river North Saskatchewan in its upper part, at the bottom of Rocky Mountains. This lake has the overall surface of 53.7 sq km.

It got its name from the local explorer, Sailas Abraham, which explored this particular area. Even though the lake is artificial, it has clear blue water, which is characteristic for glacial lakes, and the color comes from the chemical composition of rocks located in that region.

The reason we’re talking about this lake, however, is not its blue color, but the thousands of bubbles which come out of it. This natural phenomenon is something you can rarely see, and it is the consequence of a special flora located on the bottom of this lake. To be more precise, bubbles are made by the bacteria which feed on the algae, which then exhaust methane gases. During the summer, these bubbles leave the lake instantly and fly off to the atmosphere, while during the winter they create a special kind of magic. Because of the low temperatures, lake becomes frosted, and so do the bubbles inside it.

Thousand of white-blue bubbles, which are frozen under the surface of water, attract the attention of many tourist and explorers from all over the world, which say that this phenomenon is not the only one, but it most certainly is the most beautiful one.

Walking over this lake during winter gives you an incredible feeling, because of the enchantment of this beauty and because of the fear, since those cracks in ice reveal frozen methane, which is just waiting for warmer days to be free from its ice shackles…
