In the heart of Italy’s Valpolicella region, just a few minutes from Verona, lies a destination that is pushing the boundaries of contemporary wellness design.
The Aquardens thermal complex is home to the world’s largest sauna, officially recognized by Guinness World Records, covering an impressive 180 square meters and accommodating up to 300 guests at the same time.
Yet size alone is not what makes this remarkable structure truly unique. Designed by Italian architect and spa designer Claudia Tajani, the project redefines the traditional concept of a sauna, transforming it into a spectacular environment where architecture, art, music and wellness come together to create an unforgettable experience.
A Sauna Designed Like a Theater
Named Desert Sauna, this monumental space was designed like an amphitheater, introducing an entirely new concept of what could be described as “wellness theater.”
Instead of entering a conventional Nordic sauna, visitors step into a space reminiscent of a contemporary theater, where lighting effects, music, steam and architecture work together to create a multisensory experience dedicated to complete relaxation.
Thanks to this unique configuration, Aquardens has established an official collaboration with the Arena di Verona Foundation, with the sauna now hosting exclusive performances inspired by operas by Verdi and Bizet, specially adapted to accompany sauna rituals.
Home to the Aufguss World Championships
In addition to cultural events, Desert Sauna has become one of the most important venues for international sauna competitions.
It has already hosted the Aufguss World Championships as well as numerous national competitions, during which some of the world’s best sauna masters demonstrate their skills through carefully choreographed towel movements, aromas, music and steam.
The amphitheater-style layout provides excellent visibility for all guests, while a specially designed steam distribution system ensures that the entire space is evenly filled.
An Engineering Achievement Hidden Behind an Elegant Interior
Behind the spectacular appearance lies an exceptionally complex architectural and engineering project.
As Claudia Tajani explains, one of the greatest challenges was ensuring a completely uniform temperature across all six seating levels. Airflow dynamics and the power of the central heaters were therefore carefully calculated, while the entire system is controlled by a central management unit that synchronizes the LED wall, audio equipment, water effects and specialized theatrical lighting.
Ventilation, safety systems and industrial equipment are completely concealed behind luxurious Hemlock and Ayous wood finishes, preserving the warm and sophisticated atmosphere associated with high-end spa environments.
Desert Oasis Completes the Experience
The project does not end with the record-breaking sauna.
The entire complex covers 385 square meters and also includes an exclusive relaxation area known as Desert Oasis, conceived as a place to unwind between sauna rituals, cooling sessions and hydration.
Inspired by desert landscapes, the interior combines earthy tones, shades of red and LED lighting that evokes the shapes of sand dunes. At its center is an island dedicated to preparing gourmet bites and cocktails, along with dedicated spaces for coffee and tea rituals, transforming the entire visit into a complete sensory experience.
Architecture in the Service of Well-Being
The project’s creator, architect Claudia Tajani, has decades of experience in sustainable architecture, interior design, lighting and wellness projects around the world. Her collaboration with Aquardens S.p.A. includes the development and renovation of numerous spaces within Italy’s largest thermal park, with a particular focus on the harmony between materials, colors, light and the overall guest experience.
Desert Sauna represents the culmination of that approach – a space that goes far beyond the role of a traditional sauna to become an architectural spectacle, where luxury, design and wellness come together on a truly record-breaking scale.
