Italian maison Montegrappa has once again transformed a writing instrument into a miniature collectible work of art.
The new limited-edition Wild: Arctic Ice marks the fourth collaboration with Project WILD and draws inspiration from the almost otherworldly silence, light and frozen landscapes of the Arctic.
At first glance, Wild: Arctic Ice captivates with its icy shades and textures reminiscent of glaciers. However, its most fascinating detail is revealed only when the lights go out – thanks to Super-LumiNova, the body of the pen absorbs light and then begins to glow in the dark.
The result is an object that visually transforms between day and night, much like the Arctic landscape that inspired it.
Arctic Ice Captured in Resin
The body is crafted from resin enriched with Super-LumiNova material and complemented by stainless steel details. Its photosensitive surface produces a distinctive glow in darkness, further emphasizing the contours and structure of the writing instrument.
Due to the artisanal production process, slight variations in color may occur between individual pieces, something Montegrappa considers a confirmation of their authenticity and individual character. Lighter areas of the resin may also feature a subtle degree of transparency.
This gives Wild: Arctic Ice an organic appearance – instead of a perfectly uniform industrial surface, each example receives its own interpretation of Arctic ice.
A Snowy Owl Is Hidden in the Details
The Arctic story continues through the metal elements.
The cast stainless steel clip follows the design language established by previous Project WILD editions, while a feather motif inspired by the wing of the snowy owl, a species associated with Arctic regions, was chosen as a symbol of nature and the commitment to protecting it.
The top of the cap also features the engraved Project WILD expedition emblem, accompanied by the message: “What you love · You will protect.”
It essentially captures the philosophy behind the entire collection – it is difficult to want to protect something whose beauty we have never experienced.
Only 170 Fountain Pens and 170 Rollerballs
Exclusivity has been taken very seriously. Montegrappa is producing only 170 Wild: Arctic Ice fountain pens and 170 rollerballs.
The fountain pen is fitted with a 14-karat gold nib and is available in EF, F, M, B and ST1 sizes. It uses a cartridge/converter filling system, with two cartridges and a converter included in the package.
The pen measures 139 mm in length, has a diameter of 16.6 mm and weighs 48 grams.
Each example is also accompanied by an exclusive set of postcards featuring photographs of Arctic wildlife and landscapes, while Montegrappa currently includes the official WILD Arctic book as a gift with fountain pen and rollerball orders.
Luxury With a Message
Behind the project are Helle and Uri Løvevild Golman, National Geographic explorers and founders of WILD Nature, whose work is dedicated to documenting some of the planet’s most pristine regions and raising awareness about the threats they face.
That is why Wild: Arctic Ice was not conceived merely as another decorative limited edition. The Arctic motifs, snowy owl, expedition symbolism and unusual luminous material work together to communicate the fragility of one of the harshest yet most beautiful ecosystems on Earth.
The fountain pen is currently priced at €1,395 on the official website.
For collectors of luxury writing instruments, Super-LumiNova may be precisely what makes this Montegrappa creation particularly fascinating: during the day, it appears as a tribute to the frozen North, but when the lights go out, the Arctic literally begins to glow.
