Mountainous Macedonia still has an air of mystery to it...
Simultaneously ancient and brand new, it’s struggling to find its place in the postcommunist world. Black-clad Orthodox monks are just as much a part of this renewal as the hordes of teenagers, bedecked in the latest Italian fashions, sipping coffee in the stylish bars of the capital.
For outdoors types it’s a paradise. Its extensive wilderness allows ample opportunities for hikers, mountain climbers and skiers.
Solunska glava (2.538m) is not the highest peak in Macedonia, but yet, a very challenging mountain for the hikers. It is on Mokra mountain, in the Jakupica mountain range. The hiking path to Solunska Glava takes you through some of the most picturesque sites in Macedonia. The first, and also the longest part takes you through dense oak forests. The second part of the path, as you pass “Dolna Babina Rupa” goes through pine forest, by a little spring where you can fill your bottles with mountain spring water for the rest of our hike. And, the third one is … open space! Up on the mountain, through rocks and pastures, close to the skies, suddenly there is an open view of rolling hills in front of you and deep cliffs just few meters on your right side.
Smolare waterfall is the biggest permanent waterfall in R. of Macedonia, with a waterfall of above 38 meters. On the northern slopes of one of the oldest mountains in the Balkans roars Smolare Waterfall. It is located on the River Lomnica, above the village of Smolari.
The visit of the waterfall offers a unique experience mostly because one can come across many villages that have preserved the Macedonian rural tradition. Climbing toward the waterfall also allows the visitor to see the wonderful valley of Strumica. The paths that run through the forests are neatly marked, while the waterfall itself is an excellent challenge for all the enthusiasts of sport-canyon, thanks to the many spectacular opportunities for rope-descending along the waterfall.
Paragliding in Krusevo is by far the most popular adventure in this period in Macedonia. Krusevo is a witness of multiple world cup paragliding competitions throughout the past years. It has the best takeoff and landing terrains, and it has the most favorable winds for this activity.
