Amouage Elsewhere: A Sinbad-Inspired Fragrance Takes Us on an Olfactory Journey From Oman Into the Unknown

There are fragrances that tell a story, and then there are those that were actually born as part of one.

Amouage Elsewhere belongs to this second, much rarer category. Originally created for an opera about the legendary seafarer Sinbad, this opulent fragrance, with an impressive 30% perfume concentration, is now leaving Oman and embarking on a journey of its own around the world.

Amouage has never regarded perfume as merely a pleasant scent. In its world, perfumery can become art, memory, geography, history and even a form of storytelling. With the new Elsewhere fragrance, that philosophy receives perhaps one of its most fascinating interpretations yet.

The story actually begins in 2025, when the renowned Omani perfume house, at the request of the Royal Opera House Muscat, created a special fragrance for the institution’s first original opera, dedicated to the mythical Omani hero Sinbad.

The fragrance was named Sindbad and was initially available exclusively in Oman. Now, the exact same olfactory composition is entering the international market under a new name – Elsewhere. The reason is not a change in formula, but restrictions on the rights to use the Sindbad name outside Oman. Amouage has even turned this obstacle into part of the story: Sinbad has simply gone “elsewhere.”

The “Fragrance of Life” From the Legend of Sinbad

The opera that inspired the fragrance follows Sinbad on a journey as he attempts to save Princess Hayat and gain the governor’s permission to marry his beloved.

Along the way, he encounters a sorceress as well as the mysterious Fragrance Of Life, a magical scent capable of driving away evil. After saving the princess, Sinbad brings the fragrance home and restores hope to his world.

Amouage did not attempt to literally recreate the scent of the sea or an exotic voyage. Instead, the structure of the story itself was translated into perfume: home, departure, discovery of the unknown, transformation and return.

To bring this unusual idea to life, Amouage Creative Director Renaud Salmon turned to perfumer Pierre Negrin.

The result is a composition that unfolds almost like the chapters of a novel.

Honey, Mango and Spices Represent the Warmth of Home

The first chapter of Elsewhere begins with surprising richness.

Honey brings an enveloping sweetness, while apricot and mango add a juicy fruity dimension. Mandarin, grapefruit and pomegranate introduce brightness and freshness, while ginger, cardamom and pink pepper give the composition a burst of spicy energy.

It is the symbolic starting point of the journey – the warmth of a familiar place before the traveler steps into the unknown.

But then the atmosphere begins to change.

At the heart of the fragrance, black tea, davana and a highly unusual cappuccino accord emerge. The sweet and spicy character becomes darker, more mysterious and more atmospheric. The milky texture of coffee collides with tea and the herbal-fruity character of davana, creating the feeling that the familiar world has been left somewhere beyond the horizon.

Elsewhere – Fragrance Notes

Top notes: honey, mandarin, grapefruit, mango, pomegranate, apricot, ginger, cardamom and pink pepper.

Heart: black tea, cappuccino and davana.

Base: tonka bean, vanilla, cedarwood, labdanum, cypriol, vetiver and patchouli.

In the final chapter, the traveler symbolically returns home. Tonka bean and vanilla create a sweet, smoky warmth, cedarwood brings a sense of stability, while labdanum, cypriol, vetiver and patchouli build an earthy and profound foundation.

The journey ends where it began – but the traveler is no longer the same.

Six Months of Sandalwood, Six Months of Oak

What makes Elsewhere particularly fascinating is not simply its list of notes.

As part of the prestigious Amouage Essences collection, the fragrance undergoes an exceptionally long and complex maturation process.

The concentrate is infused for six months with sandalwood chips sourced from trees grown in Australia. The bioethanol that will later dilute the concentrate separately spends six months in handcrafted oak barrels made by the French artisan house Allary.

Only then does the final composition undergo another two weeks of maceration.

In this sense, time is not merely part of the production process. It becomes another “ingredient” in the fragrance itself.

Elsewhere comes in an impressive 30% Essence de Parfum concentration, presented in a 100 ml bottle, with a recommended retail price of €490 at launch.

Even the Bottle Tells a Story

Special attention has also been given to the presentation.

The bottle follows the visual identity of the Amouage Essences collection, with embossed lines inspired by desert landscapes. Viewed from above, they form the House’s recognizable twelve-pointed symbol.

There are also details that continue the story of the journey: a medallion featuring a compass motif, a blue label evoking the ocean and nostalgia for home, an hourglass symbolizing time and an anchor motif representing the security of the place to which we return.

When a Fragrance Becomes an Entire World

Elsewhere arrives at a time when haute perfumery is increasingly moving beyond the simple question of “what does a fragrance smell like?” and toward a much broader one: what kind of world does it create?

Opera, art, mythology, craftsmanship, geography and time are not marketing elements added to a finished product after the fact. The story itself was the reason this fragrance came into existence.

And perhaps the change of name is the perfect conclusion to that idea.

Sindbad did not disappear when it became Elsewhere. The formula has not changed. Its origins have not been erased.

On the contrary – the fragrance carries Oman, the opera, the legend of Sinbad and the imagined “Fragrance of Life” with it. It has simply, just like its hero, ventured beyond the familiar horizon.

Elsewhere launched globally during the summer of 2026: at Amouage boutiques and online from June 23, followed by international distributors from July 20.
