In the city of Colima, Mexico, the architecture studio Di Frenna Arquitectos has completed a project that functions both as a working environment and as a physical manifesto of its architectural philosophy.

The new building, named Taller Di Frenna Arquitectos, was conceived as a place where the everyday practice of architecture meets experimentation, research, and creative collaboration.

Rather than designing a conventional office, the architects envisioned a dynamic workspace that integrates open work areas, meeting rooms, audiovisual spaces, and a model-making workshop. These elements are carefully organized to encourage communication among team members and support every stage of the architectural process — from initial ideas and conceptual exploration to project presentations for clients.

A Space Designed for Experimentation

Located in Colima, the building functions as a kind of architectural laboratory where ideas can be developed and tested in a real spatial environment. At the same time, the structure becomes a direct expression of the principles that guide the studio’s work: clarity of form, thoughtful material selection, and a strong relationship with the natural surroundings.

The architectural composition is based on a sequence of clean, clearly defined volumes. The design emphasizes raw, authentic materials that remain visible and express their structural and tactile qualities.

Steel, concrete, charred wood, and stone dominate the project’s material palette, forming a layered visual identity. The combination of different textures and finishes creates a balance between industrial character and natural elements.

This approach perfectly reflects the philosophy of Di Frenna Arquitectos, which consistently seeks to highlight material authenticity, formal clarity, and the integration of traditional craftsmanship into contemporary architecture.

Courtyards as Spatial Connectors

A defining feature of the project is the presence of internal courtyards, which break the monolithic character of the building and introduce natural light and vegetation into the workspace.

These courtyards create both visual and physical connections between different areas of the studio, enabling a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces.

Changes in level, the interplay of light and shadow, and the presence of greenery contribute to a dynamic atmosphere that avoids the monotony often associated with traditional office environments. At the same time, the courtyards provide spaces for informal interaction and moments of pause within the working day.

Collaboration With Local Craftsmanship

The building was realized in close collaboration with local craftsmen and builders, whose expertise is visible in the construction details, surface finishes, and material treatments.

This collaboration allows contemporary architectural thinking to merge with traditional construction knowledge. The result is a building where technical precision and handcrafted elements coexist, creating an architectural language that feels both modern and deeply rooted in its local context.

A Studio With International Recognition

The studio Di Frenna Arquitectos, led by architect Matías Di Frenna Miller, is known for projects that explore the relationship between contemporary design, material experimentation, and regional craftsmanship.

Their work has already received recognition in several international competitions and awards, including the Gold Medal at the VI Regional Biennial Region V Manzanillo 2025, as well as distinctions at the Firenze Entremuros Awards, Construye Awards, and Noldi Schreck Awards.

With Taller Di Frenna Arquitectos, the studio demonstrates how architecture can move beyond its role as a workspace to become an evolving environment for ideas — a place where design is continuously explored, tested, and refined.
