La Perle d'Azur: A Cannes villa transformed into a masterpiece of contemporary luxury

On the French Riviera, where luxury is a way of life, architecture studio Marcoux Mathern & Associés has reimagined an existing residence into a home that redefines contemporary living.

Completed in June 2024, La Perle d'Azur is a comprehensive transformation of a luxury villa in Cannes, where architecture, interior design, and landscape merge into one seamless residential experience.

Although the villa was relatively modern, the architects identified a series of architectural imbalances that diminished its potential. Disconnected living spaces, disproportionate façades, and an imposing yet impersonal entrance created the impression of an unfinished composition. Rather than rebuilding the property from the ground up, the design team focused on refining proportions, maximizing natural light, and reorganizing the layout to reveal the home's true character.

The transformation becomes immediately apparent upon entering the residence. A dramatic double-height entrance hall now welcomes visitors, centered around a striking sculptural metal installation with discreet integrated lighting. More than a decorative centerpiece, the vertical structure defines circulation throughout the home, enhances privacy, and establishes an unforgettable architectural identity from the very first moment.

According to lead architect Pierre-Guillaume Mathern, the greatest challenge was transforming a minimalist interior into a warm, emotionally engaging home. The ambition extended beyond correcting architectural shortcomings—it was about creating spaces that inspire a sense of discovery, comfort, and effortless movement throughout the residence.

One of the home's most spectacular achievements is the redesigned primary suite. Two former master bedrooms have been combined into a single luxurious retreat featuring an expansive walk-in wardrobe crafted from polished Macassar ebony and finely stitched leather inspired by the bespoke interiors of luxury yachts. The result is a private sanctuary where craftsmanship and elegance coexist in perfect harmony.

The adjoining bathroom is equally remarkable. At its center stands a monumental bathtub sculpted from a single block of travertine, whose sculptural presence balances raw natural beauty with refined sophistication. Marble surfaces continue uninterrupted throughout the space, concealing flush doors within the stone walls to create a seamless architectural composition.

The villa's lower level has undergone perhaps its most dramatic transformation. A former indoor swimming pool has been converted into a private luxury spa where teak flooring, tranquil relaxation areas, treatment rooms, and a breathtaking backlit wall of rock crystal create an atmosphere reminiscent of the world's most exclusive wellness resorts. Rising from the base of the pool to the ceiling, the illuminated crystal installation reflects light throughout the space, transforming the spa into a remarkable work of mineral art.

Outside, the residence establishes a renewed relationship with the Côte d'Azur landscape. Custom-designed sliding façade panels allow residents to control privacy and natural light with precision, while the gardens reinterpret the Mediterranean environment through olive trees, lavender, stone terraces, and carefully composed pathways. Adding a unique historical dimension to the estate is a beautifully restored stone chapel that introduces a poetic sense of place rarely found in contemporary residential projects.

The landscape architecture was created by Aurélien Liuktus of Nelumbo, while the interiors were developed in collaboration with Azur Home Interiors, ensuring a seamless dialogue between architecture, landscape, and interior design.
