INTERVIEW: Federico Delrosso

An architect with an international career (France, Switzerland, USA, Monte Carlo, Turkey), but with a solid Italian grounding, Federico Delrosso  within a few years has gained wide experience in the design of a very wide range of types of architecture: private housing, restaurants, a rehabilitation centres, office buildings, numerous projects of interior design, but also industrial design. We had a pleasure to talk to him about his work and life philosophy…

Have you always wanted to become an architect and a product designer? Yes.

Which one do you enjoy the most? My approach is as an architect….so everything for me is seen from the same view… some products I did could also be architecture… product for me is a little part of my job….so definitely I like more architecture…

Please tell us more about your design background, and what made you become as versatile as you are? My background starts since I was very young....like 18. My father was surveyor, and I started to live in a studio long time ago, I grew up in it....but before, when I was a kid I was fascinated by manual wood production, my grandfather was woodworker. Then I finished architecture in Milano. I became versatile because I'm always interested in something new. There is no size or type of architecture limits in my approach. I need to do different things, residential, commercial, but also products etc. for not to get bored...

What do you feel are the most important skills for a designer to have/develop? Coherence and integrity to his way…

Your favourite design or project? The new CafeB/SkyB in New York with soft armchair produced by Extra.

Where do you find inspiration, where do you fuel yourself with energy? I find inspiration in all the things surround me...and in the traveling

How do you think design and architecture influence everyday life? We live in antrophic places, created by humans. Then we use products, so all our life is influenced by architecture....

Is designing for you a challenge, pleasure, something that keeps you moving? Kind of challenge…to reach goals

Could you tell us something about the design of the Armchair for EXTRA, presented at Milan Design Week, and CINQUANTA furniture, your new project? that armchair for Extra  was created with a very interesting new material that Tabu produced for Extra, a multilayer of black wood…I wanted to create a product using only one material…Cinquanta for Dogtas ( Turkish company ) is a sharp and comfortable living collection, that include a flexible system of armchair, sofa, coffee table and TV unit….also in this project the flexibility of different combination were the goal… just 2 materials, wood and fabric…Cinquanta is a kind of tribute to a beautiful age, that were the 50’s.

You are on the move all the time; your favourite destination is? New York! Then Istanbul.

Your special corner in your home? Living at the mezzanine.

What is your favourite wine? Gewürztraminer

How do you see the future of architecture & design? Actually I think everything in life must be back a little to the real thing... so the future is not on search of new shapes or technology... but with more attention to human needs.

Do you read design magazines? Yes …

Where do you get news from? Internet and magazines or a few fairs…

Are there any famous designers or design movements that have inspired or influenced your work? I love Richard Meyer, Mies van der Rohe etc

How important do you think the internet is to Design? Actually, our way to live everywhere... and work everywhere...

What do you think of the Mini STUDIO magazine? Love it… especially the “mini” size…
