Still regretting missing out on the McLaren Speedtail? You're in luck. Later this month, RM Sotheby's plans to auction off a stunning blue example of one of the British brand's most prominent hypercars in Arizona. Moreover, the car is almost untouched since it left the factory.
All McLaren supercars and hypercars owe a debt to the F1, but few as much as the Speedtail. Introduced in the fall of 2018, the ultra-sleek car is the fourth member of the manufacturer's Ultimate series. Like the F1, the Speedtail features a one-piece carbon fiber chassis, a three-seat configuration, and a powerful drivetrain, though this one is assisted by an electric motor. It was also ultra-exclusive, with McLaren creating only 106 examples, as they did with its predecessor.
This Speedtail is number 69 that came off the production line. It's finished in Liquid Blue Silver, a special shade from McLaren Special Operations, which highlights its smooth and fluid lines, especially the extended rear end that gives the vehicle its name. The design is memorable, but it's also extremely aerodynamic - for example, there are no side mirrors - allowing the car to cut through the air like no McLaren before it. Inside, you'll find a three-seat configuration, with the driver's seat upfront and two passenger seats in the back. Rounding it all out are a stunning set of 10-spoke wheels and aerodynamic covers at the front.
The car's hardware is of course equally notable. McLaren took an evolved version of the P1's twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 producing 723 hp and combined it with a permanent magnet electric motor developed by the manufacturer's Formula E technology team, generating an additional 312 hp. The result is a hybrid powertrain producing a maximum of 1,035 hp, which is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. With all that power available, the car can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in three seconds, from zero to 300 km/h (186 mph) in 13 seconds, and reach a top speed of 402 km/h (250 mph). The setup should also be in pretty good condition. The listing states that the car has only 54 miles on it.
Speedtail No. 69 is scheduled to be offered for sale on Thursday, January 25, during RM Sotheby’s annual sales event in Arizona. The auction house expects the hypercar to be sold for between $2 million and $2.5 million, which sounds quite reasonable considering it started at $2.275 million new.
