In the world of haute horlogerie, where mechanical precision meets artistic expression, Czapek & Cie has unveiled two remarkable new timepieces: the Antarctique S Ice Cloud and the Promenade Midnight Pearl.

These limited editions demonstrate how rare materials such as mother-of-pearl can transform a watch into a genuine work of art, merging technical sophistication with visual poetry.

Antarctique S Ice Cloud: Inspired by the Antarctic Sky

The Antarctique S Ice Cloud draws inspiration from the light and atmosphere of the Antarctic horizon. Its dial is crafted from an ultra-thin layer of white mother-of-pearl measuring only 0.2 millimeters, carefully treated using a rare finishing technique known as nacre brouillée.

Using delicate horsehair brushes, artisans apply layers of lacquer that create a cloudy, ethereal effect across the dial’s surface. A final translucent blue coating evokes the icy sky above Antarctica, while firing the dial at temperatures exceeding 100°C permanently stabilizes the delicate finish.

The result is a dial that resembles a frozen sky, with each of the 10 pieces produced displaying a completely unique pattern. The technique is so demanding that it can be executed by only a single master craftsman at GT Cadrans, further emphasizing the exclusivity of the model.

Promenade Midnight Pearl: A Celestial Interpretation

The second timepiece, Promenade Midnight Pearl, explores a different approach to dial design. Here, Czapek uses a patented “sandwich” construction combining Tahitian mother-of-pearl with a layer of deep blue aventurine glass.

Both layers measure approximately 0.2 millimeters, making the dial thinner than a credit card. Aventurine creates the illusion of a shimmering night sky, while the natural structure of mother-of-pearl introduces depth and organic texture.

Each of the 38 pieces produced displays a unique arrangement of reflections and shades due to natural variations in the materials.

The manufacturing process requires exceptional precision. One of the most complex stages involves milling the opening for the small seconds subdial positioned at 4:30, which must be performed using CNC technology without damaging the fragile aventurine layer.

In-House Mechanical Excellence

Both watches are powered by movements developed in-house by Czapek. The Antarctique S Ice Cloud features the SXH5 caliber, while the Promenade Midnight Pearl is equipped with the enhanced SXH5.1 movement.

These mechanisms include a platinum micro-rotor, skeletonized bridges, and a power reserve of approximately 60 hours.

In the Promenade model, the asymmetrical small seconds display at 4:30 adds a distinctive contemporary touch to the overall design.

Mother-of-Pearl in Modern Watchmaking

Mother-of-pearl is experiencing a revival in contemporary watchmaking, and Czapek interprets this tradition through two distinct artistic directions.

The scattered mother-of-pearl technique used in the Ice Cloud model creates soft, painterly effects reminiscent of drifting clouds. In contrast, the combination of aventurine and Tahitian pearl in the Midnight Pearl evokes the dramatic brilliance of a star-filled night sky.

Together, these timepieces illustrate how modern haute horlogerie relies equally on technical innovation, rare materials, and exceptional craftsmanship. Through creations like these, Czapek & Cie continues to affirm its position as one of the most intriguing independent watchmakers in contemporary horology.
