Independent Swiss watchmaker Urwerk unveils the final evolution of one of its most recognizable creations with the UR-120 Blue Planet, marking the farewell to the celebrated UR-120 "Spock".

Since its debut in 2022, the model has captivated collectors of haute horlogerie with its unconventional satellite time display and futuristic aesthetic inspired by science fiction. This final edition will be limited to only 20 pieces worldwide.

The nickname "Spock" comes from the watch's remarkable satellite hour display. As the rotating hour indicator completes its journey across the minute scale, it splits into two separate segments that briefly form the iconic V-shaped gesture famously associated with the Star Trek character. The two elements then rotate independently before seamlessly reuniting to display the following hour, creating one of the most mesmerizing mechanical animations in contemporary watchmaking.

Behind this visual spectacle lies an exceptionally sophisticated mechanism. The rotating carousel consists of 175 individual components, while the synchronized movement is controlled by specially engineered lyre-shaped springs and Maltese Cross mechanisms. The result is one of the most advanced interpretations of wandering hours, a signature complication that has become synonymous with Urwerk's innovative approach to mechanical timekeeping.

For this farewell edition, the 47 × 44 mm case receives a striking sandblasted deep-blue finish inspired by the appearance of Earth viewed from space. Its two-piece construction creates the illusion of a seamless architectural form, while articulated lugs and an integrated spring system allow the substantial case to sit comfortably on the wrist despite its bold dimensions.

Mechanical details receive equal attention. The signature lyre springs and Maltese Cross components are finished with 24-karat gold PVD coating, visually highlighting the critical points where energy is accumulated and released throughout the complex movement. These contrasting golden accents transform functional components into decorative focal points within the watch's extraordinary architecture.

Powering the UR-120 Blue Planet is the automatic Calibre UR-20.01, equipped with Urwerk's distinctive Windfänger winding system. Inspired by the operation of a ship's propeller, the regulator optimizes the efficiency of the automatic winding mechanism while protecting it from excessive rotor acceleration. The movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour, offers a 48-hour power reserve, and showcases premium finishing techniques including circular graining, sandblasting, and refined Côtes de Genève decoration.

Despite its unconventional display, readability remains surprisingly intuitive thanks to generously applied Super-LumiNova, ensuring excellent legibility even in low-light conditions. Completing the futuristic design is a blue calfskin strap embossed with a ballistic-fabric-inspired texture, reinforcing the technical and space-age character of the timepiece.

Limited to only 20 examples, the Urwerk UR-120 Blue Planet represents a fitting farewell to one of the most innovative watches in modern independent haute horlogerie. Priced from CHF 115,000 (approximately US$128,000 before taxes), it stands as an exclusive collector's piece that perfectly combines avant-garde engineering, exceptional mechanical artistry, and a science-fiction-inspired design language that has made the UR-120 "Spock" a contemporary icon.
